Superior Spider-Man #14 Review

The-Superior-Spider-Man_14Collectively, Superior Spider-Man #14 and Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1 kick off the next big phase in Otto Octavius' quest to become the ultimate hero. In terms of this series, his next move after killing Alistair Smythe and blackmailing J. Jonah Jameson into turning over control of the Raft is to wage all-out war on Shadowland. The only real question is why no one else in the Marvel Universe did something about the Shadowland problem before now.

Right off the bat, one of the more inspired choices Dan Slott makes with this issue is to largely skip the setup phase. Within a couple pages, Spidey is storming down the streets of Hell's Kitchen with an armada of robots and minions. No time is wasted on battle preparations or flaunting the newly redesigned costume. The result is that Slott is able to chronicle the battle entirely within this issue. There's certainly still fallout left to cover in the next chapter, particularly in terms of the fates of Hobgoblin and Kingpin.

Slott also continues building the mystery surrounding Green Goblin's growing empire and his apparent immunity to Otto's spy network. And certainly, it's important that Slott explores the reaction among the rest of the superhero community to Spider-Man's increasingly militant behavior. Despite these open threads, by and large this issue makes for a satisfying done-in-one chapter to offset the previous three-issue arc.

Unfortunately, some of the stylistic choices in this issue don't work so well. Slott introduces a Hell's Kitchen resident who narration bookends the issue. The narration is overwrought and pretty well pointless as far as conveying any useful information. I also wish Slott would tone down the Silver Age quality to his dialogue at times. It works well for JJJ, but the villains lack menace because of the over-reliance on exposition and campy bravado.

Humberto Ramos returns to the series to help usher in this new era. I'll never be entirely happy with his hyper-exaggerated style, but for the most part it works in terms of conveying the sheer chaos and spectacle of the Shadowland battle.
