Damon Wayans Jr. Nears Deal for New Girl Return

Happy Endings' cancellation still stings for those of us who loved that series, but the cast’s newfound availability may be a boon for New Girl in a way many fans had wondered about… Yep, Coach looks to be coming back, as TVLine reports that Damon Wayans Jr. is nearing a deal to return to New Girl in the role he played in the pilot episode as Nick and Schmidt’s other roommate when Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moved in.

The situation with Wayans Jr. and New Girl was an interesting one. He shot the pilot after Happy Endings: Season 1, with Happy Endings looking unlikely to be renewed. Contractually though, New Girl was in “second position” for Wayans, and when Happy Endings was renewed, he stayed with the show.

This has happened before in TV and pretty much every year actors leave new series after the pilot is shot for various reasons. But FOX and the New Girl producers surprised many when they didn’t do what is the norm, and recast Coach (and re-shoot his scenes for the pilot), but rather aired the pilot with Wayans in it – only to then have to write Coach out in the second episode (off-camera no less) and replace him with Winston (Lamorne Morris), who we learned was actually the original third roommate who Coach was subletting from. Whew, New Girl mythology is complicated! While Wayans never appeared again on New Girl, the writers did actually reference Coach several times in the show, underlining that they weren't ignoring the character's existence.

New Girl producers had said before they'd be up for Wayans returning, but it was highly unlikely to occur while he was also on Happy Endings - especially considering the two comedies actually aired against each other at one point.

While he won’t be joining the series on a full time basis, TVLine says Wayans will be back for “a significant Season 3 arc.”
