Ghosted #1 Review

I am not a fan of horror, but I am a huge fan of horror done right. So I won’t watch the latest random zombie movie, but I will have my eyes glued to the screen during 28 Days Later. Ghosted is a horror book you need to read because it is horror done right. It’s part caper, part ghost story, and completely hilarious. This is coming from a guy who doesn’t like this kinda stuff unless it’s especially well-done, and so the good news is that Joshua Williamson and Goran Sudzuka blow it out of the water.

I keep using the word horror, but I don’t mean it in the sense of scary ghosts and big monsters. Williamson draws on the horror of humanity by opening up on a series of images that show the life of a man in prison -- and it ain’t pretty. Jackson T. Winters dreams of dying to escape his fate, so of course he’s the perfect man to be offered the job of stealing a ghost by a wealthy man with a fetish for spooky stuff.

You quickly get an idea about what kind of man Jackson is: egotistical, misogynistic, rude, and sex-obsessed. Yet somehow he’s completely endearing.

This is by far Sudzuka’s best artwork to date. He’s the kind of guy you dream about drawing your comic because he gets every last panel right. The opening pages, as unnerving as they are, do a huge amount of the narrative heavy lifting. And when he delivers a two-page spread towards the end, it’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous. This is how comics are supposed to be done.

Even when Williamson employs the tired old method of showing Jackson going around to recruit a team of supernatural experts to help him with the job, it works wonderfully because of Jackson’s no-BS attitude. Do yourself a favor and pick this comic up. It will make you cringe, laugh, and cringe again.
