Nokia's 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 Launching July 26th

After what seems like months of rumors and speculation, Nokia has finally unveiled its latest high-end Windows Phone 8 device, the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020. Not unlike the 808 Pureview, Nokia's latest is equipped with an incredibly high-powered camera sensor with Carl Zeiss optics, but with its signature Lumia design and Microsoft's smartphone operating system, megapixel count is just about all that the Lumia 1020 shares with the Symbian OS-powered device of yesteryear.

The Lumia 1020's body closely resembles recent Nokia devices like the Lumia 920, sporting a unibody casing with a completely flat top and bottom along with a 4.5-inch display. The most noticeable physical difference, however, is the housing surrounding the phone's camera and its 41-megapixel sensor. Raised ever so slightly out of the backside of the device is a black circle that contains an LED flash for video, a Xenon flash for photos, and the PureView-branded shooter.

The camera sensor can capture 34- or 38-megapixel photos in 16:9 or 4:3 ratios. A 5-megapixel image can also be captured simultaneously, which utilizes image oversampling to increase the detail of each individual pixel, similar to HTC's Ultrapixel technology used on the One smartphone. The Carl Zeiss optics are equipped with six lenses, matching the recently released Lumia 925. The Lumia 1020 also utilizes the company's new 2nd generation optical image stabilization to help keep video and photos steady and assist with low-light performance.

The Lumia 1020 will be equipped with Nokia's new Pro Camera software as well, which includes an updated radial menu for access to a wide variety of settings like shutter speed, ICSO, and focus. The company also touted the phone's exposure settings, that can be set to be so slow that you can create images with light trails.

Aside from the camera, the Lumia 1020 features a ClearBlack 4.5-inch AMOLED 1280 x 768 display protected by Gorilla Glass 3, a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of on-board storage.

A detachable camera grip will also be available, which includes a battery, a two-step shutter button, and a tripod. The snap-on attachment will cost $79.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 will be available in yellow, black, and white when it launches exclusively through AT&T on July 26th for $299.99 with a two-year contract. Online pre-orders through the carrier will start July 16th.
