App Store Update: August 2

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention. Game Debuts

Gravity Falls: Mystery Shack Attack – ($1.99)

If you haven't yet checked out Disney Channel's Gravity Falls, you should – it's one of the best animated series airing on any cable channel these days (and recently given honorable mention in IGN's Top 25 Animated Series for Adults). This new game adapts the manic action of the show into a tower defense design, as Mabel and Dipper defend Grunkle Stan's Mystery Shack from waves of invading forest creatures.

RPG Cross Hearts Arcadia – ($0.99)

Kemco's added another JRPG to the App Store, and this one focuses on constantly evolving your companion fairy into new forms by feeding her nuts.

Price Drops

Borderlands Legends – ($0.99)

Here's a game that didn't exactly blow us away when it debuted last Fall (you can read Justin's review of it here), but you may want to give it a second look now that it's only 99 cents.

Borderlands Legends HD – ($0.99)

The iPad edition is also on sale, for the same low price.

Ms. 'Splosion Man – ($0.99)

This game, on the other hand, did blow us away with its debut (with explosions). Check out our video review here, and learn why Ms. 'Splosion Man is certainly worth your time and your 99 cents:

Penumbear – ($0.99)

This unique puzzle/platformer takes a new spin on the light-manipulating mechanics other games have explored in the past – your character can walk on the edges of columns of light, tip-toeing his way to the end of each level, always just on the verge of stepping into the shadows. (Half off its normal price today.)

Freebies!

Awesome Pirates – (Free)

One freebie for your Friday here, the adventures of the Awesome Pirates. Looks like a fun, arcadey naval battler for no cost:

Updates

XCOM: Enemy Unknown – ($14.99)

Finally, XCOM. We highlighted this game in yesterday's ASU because of its price falling by five dollars, but today it stays in the spotlight thanks to the arrival of Version 1.1.0, which adds Second Wave content – gameplay modifiers that can alter the difficulty of the campaign for those who've already played it once before (and accompanied by some revised touch controls).
