What Other Heroes Could Join the Amazing Spider-Man Films?

This could be a hint of something very interesting -- or it could be the typical filmmaker-blowing-smoke kind of quote…

Amazing Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach spoke to Den of Geek recently, and Arad said the following when asked if another Marvel hero might cameo in Spidey 2: "Uh... I’d rather not answer that at this point. This is what the word ‘spoiler’ means. We want to always leave the audience with a couple of surprises. All of a sudden, you feel like, yeah, there’s a continuity. So if we say today how we go about it, we’d take away from the surprise of the movie."

So what does that mean, exactly? Arad didn't say no, and it certainly seems lately that Sony and director Marc Webb want to build out the Spider-Man universe Marvel Studios-style (as does Fox with their X-Men films). But what superhero characters might be available to Sony? Obviously we don't know the contractual arrangement that the studio has with Marvel, but generally speaking it is believed that a character who originated in a Spidey comic book is fair game. The exception to this apparently is bigger players like the Punisher and Kingpin who went on to their own "lives" outside of the Spider-Man books.

Who does that leave us? Well, a quick bit or research leads to this (not definitive) list of possibilities. Again, we don't know for sure that these characters could be in a Spider-Man movie, but they would seem to at least be contenders:

• Black Cat
• Monica Rambeau (one of the Captain Marvels)
• Cardiac
• Cloak and Dagger
• Firestar
• Man-Wolf
• Morbius, the Living Vampire
• Prowler
• Puma
• The Rose
• Scarlet Spider
• Silver Sable
• Speedball
• Mattie Franklin (one of the Spider-Women)
• Venom

So out of that list… who is actually viable? Black Cat is probably a no-brainer (and we've heard rumors to that effect already), and I suppose a Spider-Woman could show up at some point, though the Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew, is probably not available. Cloak and Dagger are kinda known outside of the Spider-universe. But ultimately, it feels like Venom is probably the main contender here, and we've all figured he was coming eventually anyway -- but as a bad guy. So a good Venom, maybe? Time will tell.

(And then of course, the pie-in-the-sky take on this is that Sony has made some kind of deal with Marvel Studios or perhaps even Fox to cameo a character like Captain America or Wolverine. This seems pretty unlikely, but hey… you never know.)

But man, my vote goes for Man-Wolf or Morbius! Who would you guys like to see show up in a live-action Spider-Man film?
