Green Lantern #23 Review

GL_Cv23_eb1qjd7y7h_-665x1024Now that writer Robert Venditti has stuck his heels into the Green Lantern universe, we’re starting to get a much clearer picture of what kind of book this is going to be. Previously, the Guardians were a constant source of antagonism, but now with Hal in charge of the Corps, his role as leader opens up a variety of fun and intriguing avenues to explore. In a truly Hal move, he chooses to investigate a murder by himself instead of ordering one of the many Lanterns under his command to do it. Impressively -- and I say this with no slight to previous Green Lantern scribe Geoff Johns -- Venditti uses this to deliver some of the best Hal moments I’ve ever read.

Artist Billy Tan is in top form for the entirety of this issue. In perfect tandem with Venditti’s excellent characterization, Hal is more nuanced and visually striking than ever. Tan reaches down deep into his pool of talent to create a tense and dark scene showcasing Hal’s disappointment, but then he's able to turn around and deliver a great laugh with Kilowog. On top of that, he shows Hal using his constructs in a way so smart that it’s a wonder I’ve never seen it before. You’ll know the image I’m talking about because it sucks you into the page with its clever design and sheer awesomeness.

Any fan of Green Lantern will be able to recite the ability of the different colored Corps by heart, yet the way Venditti has Nol-Anj using her Star Sapphire ring on Hal is completely refreshing while never deviating from the pre-established rules. The best part is that despite all the flashy ring powers, the characters are what shine brightest in that scene.

The one hiccup in this issue comes when we get a not-so-subtle look at what Relic is up to in New Guardians. It’s a tad jarring the way it’s brought about, but also succeeds in its mission to create some interest in the new villain. That leaves you to just sit back and enjoy this Green Lantern title as it continues to get better and better.
