RoboCop: Last Stand #1 Review

STK616640-677x1024Full disclosure: I love the works of Frank Miller. Pretty much everything he's ever done. RoboCop: Last Stand #1 is based on Frank Miller's screenplay for RoboCop 3 and it just oozes Miller on nearly every page. If you are a fan of his work, any of it, you'll no doubt find something to enjoy in this issue. RoboCop comics have had a spotty history – so have the films, for that matter – but this book captures that special feeling of the original movie without treading the same ground. If you are a fan of this world, check out this comic and you won't be disappointed.

Steven Grant is no slouch in the writing department and does a hell of a job here. Grant manages to inject some of his own flair for pacing and structure  -- the man wrote some of the best Punisher stories ever committed to page -- while still letting Miller's story and influence bleed through. The end result reads a lot like Grant peppered with Miller story staples and that is in no way a bad thing. There's action, insanely bad guys doing insanely bad things, and plenty of moments of RoboCop kicking ass.

Korkut Oztekin is an inspired choice for art, as his work feels like something out of the era this work is trying to capture. Few modern comics look and move like RoboCop: Last Stand #1, which is probably a good thing. The RoboCop series has always been a run down alternative future, and the art of this issue captures that. There's a lot of setup in this issue, but the few moments of action we get are pretty damn awesome, so it's fair to say that hopes are high for the future of this series. I thought about inserting an “I'd buy that for a dollar!” joke at the end here, but that's just too obvious, right?

Code Monkeys Creator Returns with Outlands

Adam De La Peña, the creator of Code Monkeys, has returned with a new animated series, Outlands. Launching as part of Geek Week on YouTube yesterday, as one of the programs on Felicia Day's Geek & Sundry channel, the series is in the 16-bit-influenced visual style of Code Monkeys, revolving around the crew on a space ship. Given the setting, it's no surprise many sci-fi films are referenced, evoked or parodied, from 2001 to Aliens. Day is among the voice cast on the series.

You can check out the first episode of Outlands below.

Valve’s San Francisco Remote Office Shut Down

Valve and the small team the company set up in San Francisco last December have gone their separate ways.

“Jeff [Gates] and I are working on indie games again,” ex-Valve employee Tod Semple told IGN. “We were working for Valve in a remote office in San Mateo. It turned out that there weren't many benefits for either side in that arrangement.

“Valve was super cool about it and is letting us continue to work on our game and is also giving us the office. So Jeff and I are starting up a new company called Temple Gates Games.”

Valve also issued a statement to IGN.

“We were big fans of their prior work. We worked with them during their startup phase, but they’re independent now and still working on their game. We wish them the best of luck.”

In December 2012 Valve hired a pair of San Francisco-based former PopCap developers, Jeff Gates and Tod Semple.

“The guys who did PvZ, down in the Bay Area. We’re helping them set up a Valve subsidiary there,” Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told Edge at the time.

Green Arrow #23 Review

GA_Cv23_R1_rwp9nrjtnu_-665x1024Green Arrow is now officially about a guy named Green Arrow searching an ancient artifact called The Green Arrow. It sounds silly... and it kinda is, but the high adventure spirit this series has taken on is fantastic. There's almost an Indiana Jones feel, a sense of long-lost mystery and high-octane action. Those looking for a street-level vigilante should search elsewhere, but if you want to spend some time in a crazy, mysterious world where everybody – seriously, everybody – is armed with a bow and arrow, then Green Arrow is your book.

Much has been said about the look Andrea Sorrentino and Marcelo Maiolo provide these pages with. If you liked what came before, you'll what you get here. As usual, there are big dynamic pages that look great and other smaller, dryer pages that come across as slightly stiff. The most interesting sequence here is a silhouette-driven flashback sequence. While it might not be a complete success, it's something unique and interesting; it's a step outside the bounds when few superhero books are taking such risks.

Jeff Lemire deserves mega credit for doing something different, as well. He's transformed this little title into a huge mythological vision quest. It's the not tone or feeling we have come to expect in a Green Arrow title, but Lemire makes it work. There are deep family secrets, violent pasts, ancient orders, and powerful artifacts. It's big stuff, at times a bit too big, but it's interesting and engaging. Green Arrow deserves your support; DC needs to know this is the kind of book we want more of.
